The Gauge 1 Model Railway Association was founded back in 1947 to preserve the remnants of what had then become a neglected scale. The club's success in promoting the gauge can be measured by the fact that there are now around 1700 members! The Association’s aims remain the promotion and furtherance of the gauge loosely defined as 1¾”. There is no distinction between 'Standard' or 'Narrow' gauge, the scale used or the choice or propulsion methods, which are all left up to the individual member. The interests catered for within the society include Live Steam, Live Diesel, Electric, Radio Control, and last but by no means least, Vintage Tinplate models, with an extremely active section of the club devoted to them.

The club issues a quarterly high quality Journal and the club has an impressive total of 14 local groups spread across the country form the south coast to Scotland, as well as groups in Canada, USA and Continental Europe. There is a programme of garden get togethers, which are available to members across the country during the summer. The club attends a number of local and national events and is currently constructing a showcase layout which is intended to show the best of many aspects of the Gauge 1 hobby. For more details, please contact the membership secretary, whose details appear above.

Paul & Tish Holmes founded MODELPALS in 1992 and they describe it as 'The Model Railway Club by Post'. Most of the members model at home for a variety of reasons. Some live far away from their nearest club, a few are disabled and unable to get to a club. There are also some clubs who subscribe to MODELPALS. The club provides members with a regular newsletter (published every two months) to help them to keep in touch with each other. Members are encouraged to write in with details about themselves, their experiences, any hints and tips that they may have for other members and articles for inclusion. MODELPALS aims to be a friendly club and is intended to encourage all modellers to have fun with their hobby. If any member has a problem with their layout Paul and Tish will try to help and if they do not know the answer a query will be published in the newsletter requesting help from members. Several suppliers of model equipment, books and videos offer MODELPALS members a discount on their goods. The club is wholly run from members subscriptions and donations and is non profit making. The co-coordinators lso run a companion web site www.Modelines.co.uk where modellers can advertise items for sale and/or items wanted.
